TLC’s: Sorority Girls
I’m shocked, I’m appalled, I’m upset. I love TLC, don’t get me wrong, but I might have to take a break from Say Yes to the Dress and Extreme Couponing for a while.
TLC’s new show, Sorority Girls, is a terrible and inaccurate portrayal of Greek life that should not be aired to the public.
In this show, 5 women from across the country have chosen to start their own sorority, Sigma Gamma, in the UK.
This alone—all further show content to be explained later aside—disturbs me. These women are all members of sororities at their respective universities. I cannot possibly understand trying to start another sorority being a member of an NPC organization already.
In the preview for the season, it is revealed that women interested in being a part of the founding of “Sigma Gamma” will be heavily scrutinized for their physical appearances, dangerously hazed through stressful tasks and unsafe behavior, and the sorority’s ritual will be televised. From what I can see, the sorority has no values or ideals that support Sigma Gamma as an organization.
- Recruitment for any NPC organization at any school is handled in a respectful manner towards potential new members by members of a sorority. No woman is ever scrutinized or made fun of in the way TLC has portrayed this process.
- Hazing is not supported or tolerated by any NPC organization. These organizations are well aware of the dangers of this behavior and strive to educate their members on the matter to see that no member experiences or practices hazing.
- A sorority’s ritual always stays within the sorority. …That’s the point. These organizations were all begun as secret societies. Although their presence is publicly known today, their secrets remain with their members.
- All NPC organizations are built upon ideals and values as set by their founders. Although each organization’s basis varies, essentially, they all strive to see that their members develop to be successful, well-rounded women contributing to society in a positive manner.
So: please sign the petition to see that Sorority Girls is taken off the air. This show is a terrible portrayal of Greek life and what NPC organizations stand for.
I did. My mother did. She’s amazing.
